Station Pier, Port Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia – It was a sea of hats at Melbourne’s Station Pier this morning as almost 4000 P&O Cruises’ passengers headed off to the nation’s most famous racing event – the Melbourne Cup.
The passengers arrived in Melbourne yesterday aboard two P&O Cruises’ superliners, Pacific Pearl and Pacific Jewel, and will spend three days in the city enjoying the Melbourne Cup Festival, including a day at the races.
The ships’ six-night Melbourne Cup cruises will inject more than three million dollars into the Victorian economy, including passenger and crew spending and port-related costs.
Onboard the ships, passengers have enjoyed a field of race-themed activities from hat and fascinator-making classes to talks from special guest speakers, legendary Melbourne Cup jockeys Wayne Harris and Malcolm Johnston.
Channel Nine Today show weather presenter Steve Jacobs joined punters onboard this morning, broadcasting live from the ship.
Pacific Jewel and Pacific Pearl will arrive back in Sydney on Friday November 8.
