On Thursday in a press conference at the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in Madrid it was announced that Spain has once again topped the list of countries with the most Blue Flag beaches in the World for the 29th consecutive year, breaking all historical records.
Spain now boasts 586 Spanish beaches and 100 marina resorts distinguished with the prestigious Blue Flag award, thanks to their quality and safety. Now entering its 30th year, the Blue Flag Awards are recognised worldwide as a sign of excellence of life-saving facilities, first-rate water quality, easy access and information about the surrounding nature of the award-winning beach.
This summer you’ll find the Blue Flag flying on one out of every five Spanish beaches. On a global scale, one of every six Blue Flag beaches throughout the world will be in Spain.
From crystal-clear waters, coves, cliffs, broad stretches of sand, the Spanish coastline is has something for everyone, from families to extreme sport enthusiasts. Holidaymakers heading for the north to Galicia, which has the highest number of Blue Flags (141) can expect to see spectacular landscapes and cliffs in destinations such as Ribadeo or Vigo.
This year, the Reservoir of Ullibarri-Gamboa in Alava, Basque Country is the first inland beach to be awarded a Blue Flag. Arona in Tenerife and Chilches in Castellon have both awarded Blue Flags with distinction in recognition for their accessible beaches catering to people with reduced mobility. Both Playa de Las Vistas, Arona and Les Cases beach in Chilches offer an “Adapted Bathing Wheelchair Service” as well as boardwalk access to the beaches and shore.
