This year has been marked as an important milestone in terms of Cambodia-China tourism relations as China turned out to be the biggest source related to international tourists coming to Cambodia after it outdid Vietnam in the first quarter of 2017, as expressed by the Cambodian Tourism Minister Thong Khon.
He said that this year will be the first year that Chinese visitors to the Southeast Asian country have exceeded the 1 million mark.
“It is a milestone year for tourism relations between our two countries,” the minister told Xinhua in a recent interview.
He added that Cambodia welcomed over 4.3 million foreign visitors in the first 10 months of 2017, up by 10 percent from the same period last year. Of the number, Chinese tourists comprised almost 950,000, up by 45 percent respectively.
The minister explained that the Chinese tourists signified 21.9 percent of the total international tourists to the kingdom.
“Based on the figures, it’s expected that Chinese tourists to Cambodia will exceed 1 million in 2017,” he said, highlighting that Chinese tourist arrival had welcomed over 700 million US dollars into the Cambodian economy in 2017.
Thong Khon explained that on an average, a tourist spent 700 US dollars at the time of his or her stay in Cambodia, which immensely contributed in expanding the local economy and reducing poverty. The minister said that their spending in Cambodia can provide for local people.
