Thomson Airways today welcomed the ninth 787 Dreamliner into its fleet when it touched down at Stansted Airport. Its delivery flight straight from the Boeing factory also marked the launch of new long haul routes from the airport to Mexico’s Caribbean Coast and Orlando-Sanford, Florida for Thomson and First Choice customers in summer 2016.
This is the first time the UK’s leading holiday company has flown long-haul from London Stansted and is part of its strategy to ensure customers across the UK can fly from their local airport and stay at the best hotels in some of the most exciting destinations.
Customers will enjoy the choice of nearly 100 hotels across the two new destinations including one of Thomson’s flagship Sensatori Resorts and, from summer 2016, one of Thomson’s Sensimar Resorts (currently Thomson Couples) in Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
The Dreamliner is revolutionising air travel with advanced comfort and wellbeing features on-board, reducing the effects of jet lag which customers flying from London Stansted will now be able to take advantage of for the first time when travelling long haul.
Customers flying long haul in Premium Club from London Stansted in summer 2016 will also be granted access to the exclusive airport lounge (Escape) where they can enjoy space to relax with complimentary drinks and snacks – the perfect start to the holiday. Fast track through security and priority boarding will also be part of the offering.
Mark Hall, Director of Product for Thomson and First Choice, said: “We are committed to taking customers on holiday from their local airport and we’re excited to be able to introduce long haul routes from Stansted for the first time. We were the first UK airline to take delivery of the 787 Dreamliner, which has enabled us to open up new destinations for Thomson and First Choice customers and fly them there in style. It also means our customers can have access to our portfolio of unique hotels, which they can only book through us, flying direct from Stansted airport.”
Andrew Harrison, Managing Director at Stansted Airport, added: “This new long-haul programme by Thomson and First Choice is an extremely exciting development for the airport and the millions of people living in our catchment area, giving them convenient access to long-haul connections on-board the 787 Dreamliner direct from their local airport. Our ambition is to deliver better services, facilities and more choice for all our passengers and a key driver is the development of long-haul from Stansted so we look forward to welcoming these new services to Orlando and Cancun onto the departure boards next year.”
Thomson Airways has recently unveiled plans to expand its Dreamliner fleet with up to four new, larger Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline has converted two existing orders for 787-8 (for delivery in summer 2016) to the new larger capacity 787-9 aircraft. The airline has also placed an order for a third 787-9 with an option to purchase a fourth, growing its Dreamliner fleet to 13 aircraft by June 2016.
The Dreamliner is one of many ways in which Thomson Airways is innovating in the air. Last year, the airline unveiled its five year vision to change the face of holiday flying through new state-of-the-art aircraft, more long-haul destinations and innovative on-board product and service concepts. This includes delivery of 47 new Boeing 737 MAX aircrafts by 2020 on which it is planning to trial new on-board concepts such as family booths and duo-seating.
