From Thursday, the Kumbakarai Falls in Periyakulam was thrown open for the tourists.

For over two months, entry was denied because of renovation work. The recent rain in the Kodaikanal Hills has attracted good flow of water in the falls. In the region, Kumbakarai is one of the few falls that has water flow almost all the year round except in April and May.

Also, it was unsafe to bathe in the falls. Although the falls is a visual treat and a popular tourism spot, there were three deep pits amidst the rocky bed of falls. “There have been instances of death in the past. Some pits were as deep as 10 feet and they were called as ‘Yanai Gajam.’

“We undertake renovation when three pits were closed to ensure safety of tourists. The work was carried out at a cost of ₹ 5 lakh. Now, people can bathe in the falls without any fear or worry as there is no danger,” said D. Suresh Kumar, range officer, Devadhanapatti Range, Kodaikanal Wildlife Sanctuary.

“The department has been maintaining a park, parking space for vehicles and changing rooms for tourists. On an average, over 500 people visit the falls every day. During the peak season, the falls had recorded a footfall of 5000 a day last year. The falls attracts tourists from all districts including Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar. Tourists who visit Kodaikanal from Kerala go to Kumbakarai Falls also.

Sabarimala season is one of the peak seasons for tourists,” he said.
