Gilbert leaders are all hopeful to place the town as an important tourist hub, increasing its share of the $21 billion spent by the visitors on an annual basis in Arizona, as per 2016 estimates from the Arizona Office of Tourism.
Tourism is one of the most profitable industries in the state, even though it’s a comparatively new business for the southeast Valley suburb.
The officials of the Gilbert explain that the time has arrived. It makes sense as the town’s nearness to the growing Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and other attractions of the region like the Gilbert Heritage District, the Riparian Preserve and Agritopia.
The tourism spending of the town grew by $100,000 to $420,000 this fiscal year. Portion of the increase comes as the town added a new, full-time tourism administrator for $115,000.
Dan Henderson, Gilbert’s economic development director, explained that the increased spending aims on three areas:
Brand: Developing the “Discover Gilbert” slogan.
Business development: Creating a bridge between travelers to local hotels via booking widget on the Discover Gilbert website.
Awareness: Advertising on travel websites like tripadvisor.com.
To employ a full-time tourism administrator, the concept is to build the department from the ground up instead of contracting out the work.
Glenn Schlottman, the Tourism Administrator is supervising on that effort, initiating tourism campaigns that mainly focus on various markets.
