Tour Operator Thomas Cook collapses, strands about 150,000 tourists, staffs to lose jobs

After failing to secure funding British tour operator Thomas Cook has ceased trading and all its hundreds of thousands of bookings are cancelled. On early Monday the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced regarding the firm’s collapse.According to the CAA 150,000 British customers were now onboard who will now be returned and as per a statement they will be brought home ‘as close as possible’ to their booked return date.

 

So far more than 600,000 vacationers are known to book through the company.

 

 

On a dedicated website the details of each flight will be posted once the flights start operating Monday. Operation Matterhorn – the codename of the emergency operation is intended at bringing Britons home who are currently on holiday with the firm.

 

 

Peter Fankhauser, Thomas Cook’s chief executive showed profound regret because of the collapse.

 

 

Four airlines of the group will be grounded and its 21,000 employees in 16 countries which includes 9,000 in the U.K will be left without a job.Thomas Cook operates from Europe, the U.K. and covers tourist destinations around the world which also includes the U.S.

 

 

On Friday the debt-laden company stated that it was seeking 200 million pounds to avoid going bust and it was in talks with the share holders and creditors to stave off failure.

 

 

 

 

The government-run travel insurance program provides protection to most of the Thomas Cook’s customer and ensures that most of the vacations can go home if a British-based tour operator goes under if they are abroad.

 

 

 

Thomas Cook has been struggling over the past few years and could recently raise 900 million pounds which included from the Chinese shareholder Fosun.

 

The company was reeling under a debt burden of 1.25 billion pounds and cautioned that political uncertain concerning the Britain’s departure from the European Union had affected the demand for summer holiday travel.

 

 

Many people were in home  due to heat waves over the past couple of summers in Europe and higher fuel and hotel coasts weighed heavily on the travel business.
