Increased usage of smartphones and mobile internet is changing the way NTO’s are connecting with travellers so that they do not have to look beyond their phones for information. Apps have become very popular and easy now across various spheres and the travel industry is one of the top ones to make use of them. National tourism organizations are now keen on promoting various destinations through a Tourism App that can be downloaded for iOS and Android smartphones.
This app is very easy for promoting a destination and generating business through its special features which have information about various tourist attractions, local events, activities, festivals, accommodations, restaurants, panoramic photos, audio guide and offline events. The audio guided tours are narrated by local tourism experts.
These tourism apps can be downloaded for free. The apps are in English language with various information Travel service centers, Police stations and hospitals, Parking lots, Train/bus stations. It’s like a virtual guide for Indian travelers for finding places for shopping, eateries and the Free availability of Wi-Fi. The NTO’s are now expecting an increasing number of downloads of the tourism app and expects good growth in the flow of visitors at the visited spots and can also promote other activities of a destination like campaigns or contests on the app. To quote Arzan Khambatta, Head of MGTO India, “There has been a positive growth after the launch of tourism apps in Macao, not only in terms of expansion in the service area but also in terms of convenience for the public. The app has helped visitors and residents in knowing the diversity, culture and hidden gems of the city, while also diverting the flow of visitors from the most visited spots and fostering community tourism development.”
