greener and cleaner worldTaleb Rifai, the UNWTO Secretary-General said that tourism can be a force for driving good, depending on how you do it. This was also supported by United Nations Environment executive director Erik Solheim and UNFCCC head Patricia Espinosa. Sustainable tourism is fast catching up across the world. Green tourism is essential if tourism is to survive and prosper. Travel and tourism is the largest industry in the world. In order for mass tourism to be compatible with ecology, travel and tourism officials will have to determine what is the maximum number of people who can visit a specific place and still permit the natural environment to flourish. Vacationers need to be careful when thinking of their impact on the environment. It is a tribute to the myriad entrepreneurs, companies, creative individuals and communities that the United Nations is marking 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. This means that in 2017, activities and initiatives across the spectrum of those involved in tourism will make an effort to create a world that’s cleaner and greener, more equal and more inclusive.
