Tourism industry remains flexible during tough financial times

NamibiaIt’s quite well-known that tourism is a significant industry. At present it contributes significantly towards the GDP, making it an important sector in the country.

As per the managing director of Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), Zelna Hengari, the tourism sector has witnessed a tremendous boost in the past two years unlike other industries which have not been survived the tough economic challenges the country is going through, “This tells us of the resilience within the industry and the key role it can play towards the attainment of the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP), National Development Plan (NDP5) and the ultimate success of Vision 2030,” said Hengari.

She further added that the travel industry has seen a boost in visitors even during the weakening of the Namibian dollar against other major currencies, side by side with increased revenue, as a result of the affordability experienced by international tourists to Namibia.

Nonethless, Hengari noticed that credit must equally be given to the exceptional work done by the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) in marketing and advertising Namibia as a destination of choice, with Air Namibia by their side, in getting foreign tourists into the country. “It is for this reason that as the government continues to tighten its belt, it should not reach a point where the country reduces its expenditure within the industry that results in a loss of momentum created over the past few years.

“What could be of assistance is to continue investing in the sector. Not only does this give the country an opportunity to expose itself to the world, but Namibia also benefits from the direct foreign exchange that comes with international tourists,” said Hengari.
