Tourism Ireland warmly welcomes today’s announcement by Ryanair of new flights from Berlin and Milan to Belfast International Airport. The services – which will commence in the autumn – will certainly help boost both leisure and business tourism to Northern Ireland from both Germany and Italy. Tourism Ireland also welcomes news of the expanded service between London Gatwick and Belfast.
Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “Today’s announcement is excellent news for tourism to Northern Ireland, as we roll out our 2016 promotional drive. We already work very closely with Ryanair and we look forward to co-operating with them to maximise the promotion of these new flights from Berlin and Milan to Belfast and to grow tourist numbers from Germany and Italy. As an island, the importance of convenient, direct, non-stop flights cannot be overstated – they are absolutely critical to achieving growth in inbound tourism. Tourism Ireland is committed to working with Ryanair, Belfast International Airport, as well as other tourism interests, to promote and help maintain vital routes and services to Northern Ireland.”
Tourism Ireland will continue to work closely with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, airlines, airports and other key partners to identify and help close gaps in air services to Northern Ireland, stimulate new flights and jointly promote existing routes.
In 2015, we welcomed about 1.9 million overseas visitors to Northern Ireland (+5% growth over 2014), contributing approximately £454 million in revenue to the local economy. Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that this tourism growth continues and is undertaking an extensive marketing plan around the world throughout 2016.
