On September 28, the Tourism Leaders’ Summit and International Symposium was held in Colombo at the BMICH. It was organized by Department of Economics, University of Colombo (UOC). The UNWTO World Tourism Day was also observed here in tune with this year’s theme, “Tourism for All – Promoting Universal Accessibility,” and the symposium focused on “Integration and Networking of Sri Lanka Tourism Development for All.”
Among the noted personalities present at this event were Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs, Minister John Amarathunga and Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism, P. M. Withana. Various events were celebrated in Colombo in accordance with WTD celebrations.
The Lifetime Achievement Award for the national contribution to tourism went to H. M. S. Samaranayake, and the Excellence in Industry Award was presented to P. M. Withana. Dr. Suranga Silva, the founder and coordinator of the Tourism and Hotel Management Studies program at UOC, was awarded for Academic Excellence for his contribution and dedication to tourism studies.
An art competition for communities with disabilities was organized on September 17 at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. Another forum on ‘Accessible Tourism and Sustainable Development for All’ took place on September 19 at Lakshman Kadiragamar Institute.
