To attract more visitors to Uttarakhand, state tourism minister Satpal Maharaj has chalked out few ambitious and ‘out-of-the-box’ ideas. Plans to build glass bridges close to all the picturesque spots to facilitate tourists with a bird’s eye view of the natural beauty via its transparent bottom is the latest outcome of a meeting with state tourism officials on Friday.
To quote him, ‘even people walking over the bridge would be able to enjoy the thrill of seeing the scenery down below. One such bridge exists in China and we will take inspiration from it.’ World’s longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge in Hunan province in China was mentioned by Maharaja. In 2016, the 430m long structure was opened to public that allowed visitors to look through a transparent floor into the valley 300m below.
Underwater tourism in Tehri is another aspect that the minister wants to highlight. Now submerged under Tehri Dam and structures like clock tower, Purana Darbar and Naya Darbar are still visible underwater; The Old Tehri Township has all the possibility of becoming a key attraction tomorrow! To quote Maharaja, ‘Tourists will be able to see the town of Tehri which was submerged during the construction of the dam. In parts of the world people see beautiful corals under the water, in Tehri, we can show tourists the rich legacy of the kingdom.’
