Edward Zammit Lewis, Maltese Tourism Minister believes that innovation, digitization and connectivity are the three main components European tourism international competitiveness. He was attending the Conference for Connecting Europe through Innovation. It was organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Office of the EU Parliament in Madrid.
He explained that digitization is crucial and playing a significant role in every aspect of Global economy. With time, information and communication technology has become an all encompassing platform where innovation, ideas and industries emerge.
To quote the minister, ‘’ The documents ‘Tapping into the Benefits of the Digital Single Market’ and ‘Digitalization and Collaborative Economy’, are amongst the tourism priorities set by the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU which I presented to the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism.’’
He also said, ‘’ Digitization is infiltrating all sectors and without the appropriate mind frame and tools we are losing our competitiveness with third countries, even though tourism is a major contributor to the economy of the European Union. It is for this reason that we must all work along the lines that the Commission has provided through the Digital Single Market Strategy. Connecting Europe through innovation depends primarily on providing online services, ensuring that Europe remains the world leader in the digital economy, assisting European companies to grow globally and citizens in their daily needs. From a tourism point of view, the implementation of the Digital Single Market enables the digital transformation of tourism for the benefit of both SMEs and tourists themselves.”
