The year 2017 has been chosen by the United Nations as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. South Africa and the Northern Cape, accepted the theme – “We do tourism sustainably”. This gives huge chance to the destination to exploit tourism’s role toward economic growth, social enclosure, preservation of culture and environment, mutual understanding and a constant contribution to job creation opportunities and the overall security of different communities within the Northern Cape.
On the other hand, the Northern Cape Tourism Authority or NCTA considers this period to be a time for manifestation. According to them, they are in need to regard the state of tourism within the province, by considering their strategic approach to tourism, and assess the quality and the variety in terms of tourism experiences. The authorities of NCTA explains that they need to keep in mind the trends in terms of global tourism and identify chances to influence those to support constant increase in the number of visitor arrivals and spending by domestic as well as international target markets.
The figures expressed by the national ‘We Do Tourism’ road shows, emphasized that arrivals of international visitors to our country have reached the mark of 10 million, spending R75, 5 billion in excess. Although this is hopeful, we require toiling harder to attain the goal of 5 million in the coming 5 years, as declared by our National Minister of Tourism lately.
