Tourism set to be our major supergrowth industry, but can our infrastructure cope?

Published on : Monday, April 16, 2018

TTFTourism will be one of Australia’s largest employers and wealth creators in the next decade, with the number of Australians working in the sector set to almost double according to new research developed by the Tourism and Transport Forum and tourism economists, Stafford Strategy.

The research report, Tourism: Supercharging Australia’s Future, has also found that overall tourism spending is expected to grow by around $74 billion (or 57 per cent) to $204 billion by 2026 and is poised to leapfrog manufacturing as our biggest employer.

But despite the rosy outlook the report also examines impediments to such growth with adequate infrastructure and barriers to private sector tourism investment identified as critical if Australia is to capitalise on the opportunities the sector provides.

Three tourism and transport industry chiefs will discuss the infrastructure Australian tourism needs to accommodate our growing visitor numbers at TTF’s Outlook 2018 – Australia’s pre-eminent Tourism Industry and Policy Conference to be held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney on 17 May 2018.

TFE Hotels CEO Rachel Argaman, the President of Carnival Crusie Lines Australia Sture Myrmell and Metro Trains Australia Chief Andrew Lezala make up a diverse panel debating the topic: If You Build It, They will Come! – Building the 21st Century Infrastructure Australia Tourism Needs.

Since its inception in 2006, Outlook has developed into one of TTF’s signature events for its members and the wider tourism industry.
