The newly-started Mekong Initiative for Startup Tourism (MIST) will organize its first reverse hackathon and tourism startup competition at the beginning of 2017 in Da Nang. This contest will invite local startups in Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos for identifying market opportunities and honor winners by matching them with appropriate investors.
MIST is being organized by the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO) and the Mekong Business Initiative (MBI). It works with local tourism players for recognizing industry challenges and blockages and seeks solutions from expert innovators. It facilitates exchanges between global providers and promising local entrepreneurs and also encourages contests among startups.
The winners will be attending a bootcamp and Demo Day at the 2017 Mekong Tourism Forum in Luang Prabang, while the best Vietnamese startups will be invited to a Demo Day at the APEC Investment Summit in November 2017 in Da Nang. According to Dominic Mellor, head of MBI at the Asian Development Bank (ADB), “Innovation and technologies are transforming the world’s tourism sector, but the Mekong region has lagged behind. We are eager to see the region’s startups innovate and create new avenues for tourism growth.” MIST is co-organized by the Da Nang Business Incubator (DNES) in Vietnam.
