Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Tourism and Information Minister has a mixed image for most people. Many consider him to be an information specialist, while for others, he is simply a propagandist. Since his taking over charge over a year ago, he hasn’t been able to implement required measures but has, in fact, pushed the country’s tourism to uncertainty. Although Nigeria’s tourism media is the most vibrant in Africa, it hardly speaks tourism truths to power and do not hold tourism leaders accountable.
Various negative and disturbing issues concerning tourism were not addressed properly with administrative probe, which created a bad image about the country’s tourism in world tourism market place. He has failed to send out directives and free himself from operational baselines of his predecessors in office, which gave rise to corruption, incompetence, deception and embarrassment in Nigeria as a tourist destination.
Nigeria has failed to make its mark in world tourism in recent times and fared poorly in international tourism expos from 2013 till date. Nigeria’s participation at the WTM isn’t also well prepared and well supported. Hence, Nigerian tourism isn’t expected to benefit much from WTM except Lai Mohammed’s self promotion. The Minister has failed to create any tourism blueprint which would lift the country from its present tourism downfall.
There is something wrong in his approach to tourism monitoring. Maybe the rebirth of Presidential Council of Tourism would provide an answer to Nigeria’s tourism problems.
