Tourism tasmania logoTasmanians have two billion reasons to celebrate our tourism industry with visitor spending topping $2 billion for the first time in history, according to the latest Tasmanian Visitor Survey.

It is the first of two major milestones recorded in the survey, which found that for the first time ever, more than a million interstate visitors toured Tasmania in the year to March.

This represents a seven per cent increase in visitor spending from $1.8 billion to $2.01 billion, and a seven per cent increase in interstate visitors from 946,100 to 1.01 million.

These milestones confirm Tasmania’s growing reputation as the place to see and be seen.

Surrounding the milestones were other records including the total number of visitors reaching 1.18 million, up seven per cent from 1.1 million for the previous year.

And, visitors staying a record 10.34 million nights, representing a nine per cent increase.

Importantly, the survey confirmed that the growing number of visitors not only visited Hobart, but two in three visitor nights were spent outside of the capital.

The survey confirmed growth in all regions; six per cent in the South, 11 per cent on the East Coast, four per cent in the North and five per cent on the Cradle Coast.

This means money in the pockets of local tourism, hospitality and service providers, from hotel and restaurant owners and staff, to those running attractions, service stations, and corner stores.

This is great news for the economy and jobs, with tourism supporting more than 37,000 workers. Our visitor economy is going from strength to strength.
