Shinju Matsuri, meaning ‘festival of the pearl’, celebrates Broome’s rich cultural diversity, unique pearling history and extraordinary natural landscapes.
The event, celebrating its 46th year in 2016, will be sponsored until 2018 through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program, made possible by Royalties for Regions.
This year’s festival is on September 10-18.
The town’s pearling industry dates back to the early 1870s when people from Japan, China and Malaysia immigrated to work on boats and dive for pearl shells.
Traditional cultural festivities and celebrations were held to mark the end of the pearl season. In 1970, the communities united their cultural festivities to create Shinju Matsuri.
