economy of NepaThe tourism sector of Nepal has experienced an upward trend in the last few years owing to the increase in inflow of overseas tourists and diversification of tourism activities. As nearly one million foreign tourists visited Nepal in last year, the figures in terms of tourist arrival will certainly rise even further this year.

Data shows that tourism contributes around 3.5 percent to the gross domestic product of the country or the GDP. Nevertheless, the actual contribution of tourism to the GDP has grown in recent years. In the past, we talked about the growth of the sector without fixing any targets. However, this time the government has set a target to attract around two million foreign tourists annually by 2020 and we are committed to achieving the target.

Most prominently, the country is marking 2020 as ‘Visit Nepal Year’ and groundwork are under way to turn the event grand and successful. The ‘Visit Nepal 2020’ campaign has created a momentum in tourism, has grown tourism activities and enhanced the morale of the fraternity of tourism. However, observing ‘Visit Nepal 2020’ does not signify that we will endorse the tourism of the country only for that particular year. The event will be kind of a milestone that would endorse Nepal as a tourism destination in South Asia. As known to many, the condition of the tourism infrastructure in the country is not good.

Unavailability of sufficient and good infrastructure has continued to be one of the major setbacks for the growth of the sector.

Therefore, the key to unravel the tourism potential of Nepal is developing competitive infrastructure, particularly in terms of air-connectivity and airports. Standardisation of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and operation of the Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa are the two main priorities of the government, in addition to constructing other planned airports and increasing Nepal’s connectivity to the world markets.
