The first quarter of 2017 witnessed an increase in foreign tourist arrivals to Cambodia with more than 12 percent up as the country revamped its services and attractions to lure more visitors worldwide. From January till March, a total of 1.5 million overseas tourists visited with 12 percent growth in comparison to the same time last year. Majority of tourists were from Asia. Whereas, Europe and the United States are the continents with the least number of travelers traveling to Cambodia in 2017.
China occupied the top spot with 273,000 tourists, followed by Vietnam with 203,000 and South Korea with 127,742 respectively. Lor Thoura, director of the Tourism Ministry’s marketing department, expressed that Cambodia has been really working hard in order to endorse itself as a striking tourist destination.
To quote Mr Thoura, ‘The ministry has been promoting Cambodia at festivals within the country and also at tourism fairs abroad. We promote Cambodia within the region and further afield. Tourists from China, South Korea, Vietnam and Thailand find it easy to get here because of direct flights and border crossings. But for those from further away, travelling here is more difficult, so we are less of a priority destination.’
Improved flight connections and high quality services and attractions have led to the increase in tourists, as confirmed by the industry experts. Ho Vandy, secretary-general of the Cambodian National Tourism Alliance, believes that the government’s open sky approach and various measures to attract foreign investment have helped to lure more visitors to the country, as tourism offerings have been constantly upgraded.
