Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka swiftly declined in June as an aftermath of recent terror attacks

Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka swiftly declined in June, which reflects the severe economic impact of the Easter bombings on the Indian Ocean island nation.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority said that there were 63,072 tourist visits to Sri Lanka last month, which is a drop of 57 percent compared with June last year, when the number was 146,828.

The highest number of these tourists was from India, followed by Australia, the UK and China. Almost 97 percent of tourists arrived by air.

The recent blasts killed more than 250 people, including 45 foreigners who came from China, India, the U.S. and the UK. Tourism accounts for 4.9 percent of Sri Lanka’s GDP.

Around half a million Sri Lankans directly depend on tourism while 2 million depend on it indirectly.
