Tourist arrivals to Myanmar’s second largest city increase by 26% in 2015

Myanmar19.12Mandalay, the second largest city of Myanmar, welcomed 306,432 tourists in 2015, up 26 per cent from 242,566 in 2014, Mandalay Region Hotel and Tourism Department said on Saturday.

 
According to the latest census, Mandalay, which is the last royal capital of Myanmar, has a population of 1.2 million.

 
Majority of foreign tourists come from China, Thailand, France, Germany and the United States, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.

 
The tourist sector in 2016 depends on the progress of tourist-based investment in Myanmar, as well as, the global and ASEAN economy, the spokesperson of the department said.

 
Plans have been underway to expand the international flights and airline access to Mandalay. At present, eight domestic airlines and five international airlines are operating services in Mandalay.
