A tourist group, as per the agency, had parked their cars away from the main parking spot of this place and opted to create their own hiking trail that became quite visible on the mountain itself. Since this mountain has been already declared protected, this is considered to be completely illegal.
As per the Ranger of the Environmental Agency, Arna Hjörleifsdóttir, their first response would be to upgrade the signs as well as enclosures around the area.
In this case, the group was so huge that the trail had become quite apparent.
The Ranger added they had already started working on erasing the trail raking it over again and finally evening it all out. Since the ground underneath this area is pronounced they were making the best efforts to erase the trail with an aim to check others from following their footsteps in future.
Based close to the eastern portion of Mývatn, the mountain had erupted in 2500 BP and molded the crater that is approximately 1 km in diameter.
And, it is among the most favorable hiking spots in the area of Krafla.
