In the early months next year, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society or DE, will introduce an interactive mobile application for tourists worldwide. As an important initiative of the government’s digital tourism road map, the mobile app will target to endorse different tourism activities, as per the DE minister Pichet Durongkaveroj.
To be provided with free of charge, the mobile app will collect and then incorporate all information of tourism that have been offered by various agencies so far. This includes the datas and information received from the Immigration Bureau, journey planning, events calendar, online booking, and digital tour guide and from key attractions in provinces along with the availability of public services including areas with free WiFi hotspots.
In today’s context, tourism is one of the key revenue generators to the country with approximately 30 million overseas arrivals from Jan 1st to Oct 11th of this year, a growth of 5.6% from last year. They carried around 1.37 trillion baht with them in terms of revenue, a 7.6% rise annually. The government gave the responsibility to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to take on digital technology in order to create the database via integrated application in partnership with the DE Ministry and other agencies. Mr Pichet explained that the Ministry of Tourism has a huge database in terms to tourism businesses along with services whereas the DE Ministry is accountable for technical infrastructure.
Electronic Government Agency, Digital Economy Promotion Agency and CAT Telecom under the DE Ministry have been offering support in developing the mobile app platform. The DE Ministry over here will function as a decision support system for the digital tourism implementation. Formerly, CAT Telecom was given the contract to offer free WiFi hotspots in Phuket town.
