Townsville Enterprise Tourism and Events Director Bridget Woods said that the match was an opportunity to put Townsville on the international stage.
To quote Woods, “Townsville is pitching to be the home of regional Australia’s best live events and this event fits perfectly into the region’s strategy for event attraction. Events like this put the spotlight on our region and we’re really excited to see the council working hard to secure an international calibre event. Tourists will spend on average $254 a day whilst they are in our region and the stadium can hold up to 10,000 people so we’re expecting to see a lot of people visiting from outside of the region which again would generate more jobs for economy and a much needed injection into our tourism businesses in this off peak time.”
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said that her city was well-equipped for a sporting event of this scale.
Hill said, “The facilities here at Tony Ireland Stadium are rated all around Australia. These are great facilities; they meet not just national but international standards, which is why we’re able to host this match.”
