Hundreds of thousands of commuters faced travel chaos due to a single buckled rail leading to millions of pounds in financial damage to the wider economy.

After the morning rush hour to and from the London Waterloo was disrupted due to overrunning engineering works, the Network Rail apologized.

The South Western Railway was almost shutdown at one point on Monday and the train operator went on warning the passengers of not travelling.

A freight train was unable to proceed and caused blockage in the line used by the Southern trains.

The journeys of commuters boarding trains on the lines linked to the London Waterloo with Wimbledon, Portsmouth, Winchester, Southampton, Dorset and Devon took a longer while to reach their destination.

Those returning from work to home were informed beforehand that as trains and train crew were in the wrong location for the next duty and the services would remain disrupted for the entire day.

Britain’s busiest rail station saw chaos beyond the South Western Railway network and a freight train blocking the line to Sutton and was unable to join the Wessex line.

In Surbiton a track replacement project was about to finish at 4:30 am and the lines were handed back to the South Western Railway in the morning rush hour.

The twisted rail caused work near Surbiton to overrun significantly shortly after 4 am as mentioned by the Network Rail.

A Network Rail spokesperson confirmed about the investigation that caused the work to overrun.

Although the problem was concentrated to a specific location the track replacement work took place in all signaling in the area that was to be tested. Most of the travellers faced delay after the normal morning peak.
