For almost two years the Trichy district tourism officer’s post has been lying vacant. Not only Trichy, at least, 25 per cent of the district tourism offices across the state are lying headless.
Out of total 32 district tourism offices, eight are headless and neighbouring district tourism officers (DTO) are in charge of the districts. Similar is the case with its offices in other states where three offices out of the total 11 are functioning under the in-charge officials.
This has started affecting the tourism prospects of many districts, especially Trichy, where tourism activity has been confined to a few temples. But it reality, there is lot more to be explored apart from temples which can place Trichy in the tourism map of the state prominently.
However, remaining headless for such long period has led to a situation where there has been no plans or attempts to identify places that can attract tourists. It is ironical that state tourism minister Vellamandi N Natarajan hails from Trichy district.
According to G Siva Kumar, DTO, Namakkal, who is in-charge of Trichy, the latest work commissioned with the tourism fund is the installation of LED lights at Mariamman temple, Samayapuram apart from a few other places.
Installation of sign boards at a few places may be carried out in the coming days. He said that there has not been any discussion on developing new places with tourism potential.
Senior officials from Tamil Nadu Tourism development corporation (TTDC) said that three DTOs have been recruited recently, but are under training. Their appointments may not fill the vacant seats as a few more DTOs are due for retirement in the coming months.
“We are rich in heritage, but fails to showcase it to the world owing to the lack of marketing and publicity,” said joint secretary, Trichy Travel Federation, S A Mubashir.
