Shanghai World Travel Fair boosted the much devastated Tunisian tourism sector and celebrated the North African country as the “Best African Tourist Destination in 2017”. This enhancement will add much needed momentum to the tourism sector in Tunisia as it’s looking to expand its tourist sources. Additionally, it will assist Tunisia to display its tourism attractions in China, one of the largest tourists emitting market in the world with 100 million annual travelers. Almost 94% with 7396 tourists in 2016, Chinese tourists visiting Tunisia increased considerably. The first quarter of 2017, in comparison to the same period in 2016 witnessed a massive jump of 400 percent in terms of number of Chinese travelers visiting Tunisia.
The terrorist attacks in 2015 hampered Tunisian Tourism industry immensely marring the country’s reputation as a holiday destination. However, in 2016, Russians and Algerians have saved the tourist season to some extent after ISIS attacks discouraged lot of French, British, German and Dutch tourists from visiting Tunisia. These awful terror attacks tarnished the image of a peaceful Mediterranean country located in North Africa completely. Here tourism is a vital economic sector and one of the main sources of hard currency as well as the largest employer.
