He was learning Chinese in a narrow building on Thursday along with nine other tour guides of the Turkish-Chinese Cultural Association located at central Istanbul. All of them were learning the Chinese language word by word after their teacher.
Ozkan became quite good in English and Polish after working as tour guide for 10 years. A month ago, he determined to take the Chinese course in order to perk up his career.
Turkey is looking for ways to lure as many as one million Chinese tourists by 2018, as China declared the coming year as Turkey Tourism Year. While the tourism and other sectors are welcoming themselves for the event, more and more tour guides are returning to the classrooms.
To quote Ozkan, “it is a little bit difficult. But we have a good teacher here and we do our best to introduce our country, our history, our lifestyle, all about Turkey to the Chinese people. Beside basics of the language, I am also teaching about the history of tourist sites in Turkey with the help of materials in Chinese,” she said.
All the Turkish guides are gaining knowledge about the Chinese people, their lifestyle, eating habits and culture through the course. “Our aim is to prepare the tour guides in a best possible way,” said Ye.
