U.S. Travel Salutes Departing TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger

U.S. Travel Association's Education Seminar“Peter Neffenger deserves every bit of the respect he has earned from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. What once looked to be a period of unending challenges for TSA turned out to be an era of remarkable progress under his tenure. I speak for the entire U.S. travel community when I say he will be greatly missed.

“Since stepping into the role of Administrator in 2015, Mr. Neffenger has worked tirelessly to ensure that our aviation security system is effective, efficient and responsive to the evolving global security landscape. No one was ever under the illusion that his job would be easy, but under Mr. Neffenger’s leadership, the agency has made massive strides in its mission to protect all flyers.

“Early last summer, for example, Mr. Neffenger was faced with a horrific security line crisis unfolding at airports across the country. Thankfully, his quick actions to address the problem averted what could have been a major economic and security catastrophe. Mr. Neffenger’s advocacy for redirected resources, as well as his willingness to collaborate across agencies and with the private sector on smart solutions to congestion at TSA checkpoints, swiftly cut down wait times and instituted enduring improvements to the security process.

“We are particularly grateful for Mr. Neffenger’s efforts to expand TSA PreCheck, the agency’s premier trusted traveler program. I’ve said many times that the program is a godsend for TSA’s effectiveness, making everyone safer by allowing thoroughly pre-screened travelers through expedited security lanes. In our policy blueprint released late last year, U.S. Travel highlighted TSA PreCheck expansion and other common-sense methods for improving TSA’s operations—and Mr. Neffenger proved a receptive, capable ear for our ideas. We hope that his successor will possess this same collaborative spirit.

“Travel is crucial to America’s economy, and to retaining our country’s place on the world stage—and travel in the U.S. begins and ends with security. We are profoundly appreciative of Mr. Neffenger’s remarkable work in a relatively short span of time. His dedication to improving the TSA has streamlined security at our airports and improved the flying experience for millions.

“I thank and salute Mr. Neffenger, a true travel champion, for all the work he has done to secure and streamline travel in America. The U.S. travel community wishes him the best in his future endeavors, and looks forward to working with his successor, building upon his accomplishments.”
