The United Kingdom finally decided to issue a strict lockdown notice and is currently banning people to leave their houses except for very limited or urgent reasons. On Monday, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson officially addressed the UK citizens and ordered a stay-at-home notice. This is perhaps the strictest set of restrictions Britain came across ever since the end of the Second World War.
The decision has been undertaken in light of the recent coronavirus pandemic that is rapidly spreading in different parts of the globe. The death toll in the UK rose to 335, as of Monday with thousands of people testing positive each day.
According to the new set of rules announced to curb the deadly coronavirus, people in the UK are allowed to step out of their residence only for essential reasons like buying food or medicines. People are allowed to leave their homes to exercise only once each day. Numerous people have been asked to work from home.
It has also been mentioned that traveling for work is only permitted only when it is absolutely necessary. All non-essential shops have been ordered to close with immediate effect alongside the closure of playgrounds, libraries, gyms and religious institutions. All social events have also been asked to postpone except for funerals.
The UK Police has been given the responsibility to break any public gatherings. They have been advised to issue fines and charges on finding anyone breaching the rules. People going out for necessary reasons have been advised to maintain a distance of 6ft with other people they come across and do not live with.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in his statement that the British people are being given one simple instruction and that is to stay home. He said that the critical thing required at present is to stop the disease from spreading between households. He mentioned that British citizens should refuse and refrain from meeting friends as well as family members who do not live with them. He also added that if people fail to follow the rules, police will have the power to enforce them.
He further shared that no Prime Minister wants to enact measures like this especially knowing the damage and disruption it can cause to people and their lives, jobs, and businesses. However, he said, that this is the biggest threat the country has faced for decades and the measures are inevitable.
Though the latest restrictions sent the UK into lockdown, it is yet to go as far as other European countries. The UK government has decided to review the measures after three weeks. As of now, no paperwork is required for people to go outside.
