The Brits are warned before travelling to Mexico after dozens of tourists were reportedly struck down with food poisoning. The outbreak involves a number of luxury hotel complexes in the Riviera Maya resort near to Brit favourite Cancun.
According to the health experts in the UK, the disease is most probably inked to tainted food supplied to hotels throughout the luxury hotel complexes. The Riviera Maya resort near to Brit favourite Cancun suffered a similar outbreak last year. Guests are believed to have eaten contaminated food in their hotels and later fell ill with severe stomach cramps and diarrhoea. A number of hotels are believed to be affected by the outbreak including Thomson run four star Catalonia Riviera Maya Resort & Spa and the hotel Royalton Riviera Cancun.
Staff at some of the affected hotels have reportedly been kitted out with latex gloves. As a part of precautionary measure, hand sanitizers are now on the entrance to buffet rooms with guests told to use them before and after meals. A number of victims have been diagnosed with Cyclospora after they returned from the resort. Cyclospora, speaking clinically is commonly associated with food poisoning and poor hygiene and is spread by infected human faeces contaminating water or food.
Last year, the resort suffered a similar outbreak here 79 people were confirmed with the bug when they returned to the UK. The tourists brought out their chagrin on travel site Tripadvisor. Describing their ordeal, one of them said that two out of five members contracted this illness.
During June and July, there were cluster of cases reported and as per the experts, the source of this infection is likely to be foodstuff. This is why tourists are requested to maintain strict standard of food, water and personal hygiene while travelling to Mexico.
