UNWTOThe United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) mentioned that by 2030 the world could see 1.8 billion tourist. Atleast one in five persons in the world would travel around the globe.

Taleb Rifai, the Secretary-General of UNWTO mentioned how the role of travel and tourism is impacting global developments and changing the world into a better place.

He further added how travel has brought the world together in the most incredible and impressive way, it has just turned the world into a more connected, informed and a caring place.

However, the global phenomenon has also brought about serious challenges like pollution, waste, labour exploitation, prostitution and abuse of children, and deterioration of natural resources.

All human activity has both advantages and disadvantages, it is up to people to ensure that the impacts from tourism are positive and contribute to sustainable development according to Rifai.

He said that 1.8 billion travellers by 2030 might lead to 1.8 billion opportunities or 1.8 billion disasters the onus is on us.

The General Assembly had proclaimed 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
