L’Austral that is one of the yachts of a luxury cruise company is located in a certain port at Bluff after it had suffered from ‘an issue’ at sea. It was travelling to the Sub Antarctic Islands.
Warrick Low who is the tourism team leader of Venture Scotland said that he discovered around 4 p.m. on Wednesday that the cruise vessel would be arriving on Thursday afternoon. Here, about 200 passengers would have to spend the night on the ship and disembark on Friday morning.
It is expected that the cruise would start its normal route to the islands on Saturday morning.
He then also said that the sophisticated passengers are trying to go for something new in the freshly heralded cruise tourism season.
Low said that he and his team were making the best of efforts to ensure that the cruise tourists are showcased the best of the region of Southland to impress them. He went on to add that they had been working with tourism operators and certain local parts of the region with an aim to create a large number of cruise tourism opportunities.
The businesses based in the Catlins, Western Southland, Lumsden and Gore were contacted, alongside the tourist guides, beverage businesses, food and other parties to plan about how to make the Southland experience an enriching one for tourists.
Low said that since the passengers belonged to the luxury cruise market, a number of passengers would be based around ‘natural estates’ around the region.
Though Southland did not flaunt an international airport, there has been a possibility that the region might have an international port that is used to tap into the cruise ship industry in the future, according to Low.
