A blaze broke out on the United Airlines airplane immediately after 30 minutes of the flight after it took off from San Francisco around 11.30 a.m on Monday. Thick smoke billowed out that surrounded the plane amidst loud bangs.
The incident terrified the passengers of the plane. There were about 202 passengers onboard the flight and a few minutes into the flight, the 873 engine of the United Airlines plane started malfunctioning.
Doug Yakel who is a spokesperson for SFO said that since the aircraft confronted with some engine issues it was compelled to shut down one of its four engines prior to returning to the airport.
The Boeing 747 plane had caught fire after the compressor section that was located on the left side of the engine, failed suddenly.
Aviation officials claimed that the airplane would have been really safe even though it was experiencing some loud bangs and stalling. The plane then landed at San Francisco airport around 1.35 p.m. It had taken a flight route via Santa Cruz. This was because fuel had to be dumped into the air to enable the plane to make a completely safe landing.
Charlie Hobart, a spokesperson for the United Airlines said that 15 crew members were present on board the flight to ensure that the passengers did not receive any injuries.
Hobart went on to add that the exact reason that triggered the malfunctioning of the flight is yet to be known.
The authorities helped passengers to rebook another flight that would take off in late afternoon. A spokeswoman for United Airlines said that the dysfunctional plane would not be permitted to fly again till it was under gone proper servicing.
