UNWTO: By staying home today, we can travel tomorrow

The UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) observes that full or partial travel restrictiosn have been or continue to be introduced across the world considering the recent COVID-19 situation.



Zurab Pololikashvili, secretary-general of UNWTO said that the pandemic affects every level of society and they stand by those affected in these times.


On the already slowing economies the impact of the pandemic has made tourism vulnerable. Small and medium-sized enterprises compose 80% of the sector and million of livelihoods in the world are left vulnerable.



UNWTO works closely with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to further a collaborative response to COVID-19 and believe that people and their well being come first.


After a high-level meeting at the WHO headquarters in Geneva on March 10, they jointly underscore the importance of international cooperation and strong relationship in difficult times.


Based on the WHO recommendations , UNWTO has implemented public health protocols and are closely following the measures introduced by the government of Spain, their host country,

Considering the latest expert recommendations all UNWTo events planned until April 30 have been suspended and will be rescheduled.


UNWTO personnel will be working from home until the end of March and will remain fully operational during these extraordinary times. It is living up to its social responsibility and caring for the safety and well-being of families.

To lead future recovery the tourism sector is uniquely places and the sector will provide jobs that people need to bounce back and will drive economic growth which will help the whole communities to recover.


Pololikashvili said that for now they must be patient and stand ready, by staying home today, they can travel tomorrow. And travelling tomorrow will support jobs, celebrate culture and promote international friendship and understanding.
