During a ministerial meeting in Jakarta, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said on Friday that Indonesia needs concentrate on ‘attraction, access and amenities’ taking its tourism industry to the next level.
To quote Arief, ‘These three aspects have to be solid and integrated to boost the number of visitors to our country.’ ‘Air Connectivity and Its Impact on Tourism’ – the study of United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) 2014 and was used as a benchmark to enhance Indonesia’s tourism industry.
The study also brought to the forefront that simple slot permits by deregulating domestic flights, opening up of more airports and creating international airports in world-class cities. To quote Arief, ‘we must touch on three points: air service agreement, airport development and multiple brand strategy for legacy carriers.’ From 1998, bilateral cooperation in air service agreement has been sending lot of overseas tourists to USA and Japan.
In the last two years, he added by saying that terminal growth and runway extension at airports also increased the number of overseas tourists by 50-60 percent in Japan. For example, Singapore Airlines has implemented a multiple brand strategy successfully in last few years with its mid- and low-cost carriers (LCC) Silk Air, Tiger Air and Scoot. To quote Arief, ‘These are the current benchmarks, we would do well to emulate them.’
