Hotels in America are offering congee and other mouthwatering Chinese dishes to room service. Besides, casino staffs are being trained on Chinese etiquette. Various shopping malls and tourist attractions in United States are translating menus, signs and information booklet in Chinese.
The hospitality industry of United States is keeping no stones unturned to make Chinese travelers feel at home. Chinese visitors are soon to surpass travelers from United Kingdom and Japan, making it the single largest demographic internationally.
In cities like Los Angles and New York, this practice is has become commonplace now. Boston, Las Vegas, Washington and Seattle are now adopting this move, as confirmed by the industry officials.
To quote the industry officials, ‘Americans traditionally lag behind what other international designations do for different cultures,’ said Elliott Ferguson, CEO of Destination DC, the city’s convention and tourism organization, which last year launched Welcome China, a certification program for local businesses. ‘We just kind of assume that one size fits all. Quite frankly, that’s just not welcoming.’
To emphasize tourism, many local associations have launched campaigns to incorporate Chinese language and traditional offerings in various member hotels and restaurants. Also, satellite offices in various Chinese cities and starting tourism-focused sales missions in China are some of the measures that many American companies are adopting.
