To quote Satpal Maharaj, the state’s senior-most cabinet minister, while attending a FICCI tourism investors’ function in Delhi. “Uttarakhand is not just about the five dhams. We are making a new tourism policy and I need to tell you that in our state there is an unusual (kind of) tourism – mystical and supernatural tourism.”
Nine departments like the tourism, pilgrimage and religious fairs and culture, are in charge of Maharaj besides Indo-Nepal and Uttarakhand river projects. While describing the concept, the minister mentioned the tales of myths and miracles inspired by local deities. He also said that there were times when these ancient Gods appeared and gave their powers to the humans. These activities, he narrated lured huge crowds in the state. The minister requested the investors to come forward and make the most of these “unusual” tourism opportunities in Uttarakhand.
He also added that he is interested to explore circuits that were “off the beaten track”. These two circuits would concentrate on myths and miracles encircling deities in Jaghdhar in Rudraprayag and Joshimath.
Maharaj urged all the financiers at the same time to consider investing in various projects that went beyond the five dhams — famous pilgrim spots – in Uttarakhand. Suggesting several more tourist circuits for the state, he expressed that the new policy would have a Devi Circuit, Shaiv Circuit, Vaishnav Circuit, Golu Devta Circuit, Nagraj Circuit and Mahabharata Circuit.
