The Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with the Secretary General of the UNWTO Dr. Taleb Rifai on August 27. Rifai arrived to Uzbekistan for participating in the international conference “Central Asian Renaissance in the history of world civilization” in Samarkand.
Mirziyoyev promised dynamic and fruitful cooperation with the specialized UN institute in the field of tourism. Other areas of further expansion of practical cooperation in the field of tourism were discussed during the meeting.
Particular attention was paid to the implementation of coordinated measures for popularizing the tourist destination in Uzbekistan and the Central Asian region, the development of new types of tourism and development of demanded tourism products as well as creation of modern international infrastructure. Dr. Rifai said that the UNWTO wishes to actively take part in programs and projects for the development of tourism in Uzbekistan.
In Uzbekistan, the Secretary-General also met with Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov.
The meeting discussed the mutual interest in the consistent realization of the existing potential of cooperation, based on the rich historical, architectural, cultural heritage of the Uzbek people. Establishment of the Regional Commission for Central Asia under UNWTO and other topics of mutual interest were also discussed.
The international scientific conference – “Central Asian Renaissance in the history of world civilization” has started its work in the Samarkand city (Uzbekistan) on August 28. The conference is being held under the auspices of UNESCO.
