Vancouver tourism taking advantage of US travel slump

Published on : Wednesday, March 1, 2017

Vancouver tourismAmid concerns or boycotts of traveling to the US following President Trump’s travel ban, Vancouver and other cities in Canada are poised to capture the US tourism downturn. Vancouver already had good records last year. Tourism Vancouver said that overnight visits to Vancouver crossed 10 million people in 2016, which is a new record for the city, also making it the third consecutive record-breaking year.

Vancouver performed the best among major Canadian cities, with higher hotel occupancy and higher average daily rate than Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. The main source of international tourism for Canada was from the U.S., with 2.3 million overnight visitors in 2016, which was a 9.8 percent increase from 2015.

There were also international visitors from Mexico, China, Australia, the UK and South Korea. Also, Port Metro Vancouver welcomed 826,820 passengers from 28 ships in 2016. Factors contributing to the strong tourism year for Canada included a low Canadian, the lifting of visa requirements for Mexico in late 2016, low gas prices and increased flights. There were other factors as well.
