Venetians are apprehensive about the future of their city. Inundation by high tides and tourists is wrecking the island city’s cultural heritage and might ultimately make Venice uninhabitable. Floodwaters devastated parts of the ancient city earlier this month.
However, rising sea levels are not the only threat. With more Venetians leaving, Venice stands the risk of sinking under mass tourism.
The authorities in Venice are facing the challenge caused by climate change and influx of tourists. They are also dealing with thrifty day trippers. Sergio Boldrin, one of Venice’s most renowned mask makers said, “The city has become ugly. It’s lost its soul. These people just don’t recognize its real beauty.”
Venice attracted an estimated 30 million visitors this year. The crowds are damaging resources but providing little value for the local economy.
