Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of the Vietnam delegation Deputy Foreign Minister pit forward a proposal on May 7-8th at the 14th ASEAN-Canada Dialogue in Ottawa, Canada. He requested both the parties to continue developing efficiently existing mechanisms like the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the ASEAN-Canada consultative meeting. He has urged Canada to initiate and utilize its key role as an important member of major groupings like G7 and the G20 and support the ASEAN in creating a rule-centric regional security structure.
Besides, the delegate advised for introducing education cooperation via increased number of Canadian scholarships for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. Also, to establish closer links between ASEAN and Canada in terms of tourism and people exchange in the length of joint efforts to narrow down the development gap. Additionally, he requested Canada to promote its firms and indulge in investing in infrastructure projects, growth and expansion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-up activities in ASEAN member nations.
Vietnam always gives lot of importance to ASEAN-Canada relations, as explained by the Vietnamese diplomat. They also stated that the two sides should have more encouraging practical activities in order to tap the cooperation potential fully. At the same time, he showed his concern about the issues in the East Sea and highlighted Vietnam’s constant stance in applauding Canada and its stances related to East Sea issue.
