Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island receives 370,000 tourists in first ten months

Vietnam Phu QuocPhu Quoc island in Vietnam received some 370,000 tourists in the first ten months of the year in meeting 97 percent of its annual target, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.


The number represents a year-on-year increase of 34 percent with over 72,500 overseas tourist arrivals to Vietnam’s largest island in Kien Giang province.


From January to October, the locality earned more than 1 trillion VND (US$47 million) from tourism, surpassing the 4.2 percent target and an increase of 33 percent over the same period last year.


The government plans to turn Phu Quoc island into a special administrative-economic zone by the end of this decade and a ecotourism and entertainment centre and regional financial hub.


It will also act as a national and regional forest and sea biodiversity conservation centre that holds a special position in security and national defence.


Phu Quoc posts an annual economic growth rate of over 24.5 percent, a 5.2-fold increase from 2004.


The island has attracted 206 investment projects valued at over 4 trillion VND (US$190.5 million) so far.
