Indonesian government is all prepared to enhance its ecotourism and rich cultural heritage by empowering the rural areas in attracting foreign tourists. The tourism ministry of this country along with various local villages and transmigration ministry will utilize Rp 89 trillion in developing the infrastructure of tourism of the country in the coming year. The concept of Tourism village is unique with a huge potential to improve tourism, as believed by the director general for development and empowerment.
To quote Ahmad Erani Yustika, director general for development and empowerment, ‘for example, villages with abundant water resources can develop ecotourism destinations’. For community development, growth of hotels, souvenir-production centers and standardization of tourism services, village funds play an important role. In 2017, villages are expected to receive Rp 1 billion each year for infrastructure development. 10 emerging destinations along with Morotai, Mandalika, and Borobudur Temple are getting significant focus in the expansion of tourism of Indonesia. By 2019, President Joko is aiming to expand tourism GDP by 15 percent. Now the fourth-biggest contributor, tourism is expected to bring $20 billion by 2019.
Priority destinations are significant in enhancing the tourism of Indonesia at the village level. He said, ‘we have chosen the villages around Borobudur, Tanjung Lesung [in Banten], to cite a few, as pilot projects’. Enhanced IT infrastructure in the villages is one of the main factors in boosting local tourism, as per Jajang Gunawijaya who happens to be the tourism analyst at the University of Indonesia.
