Fire and Rescue NSW told the media that they were called to the airport that is adjacent to a RAAF base around 3.06 p.m. after the flight VA 1188 that was carrying 27 passengers and four crew members had gone for an emergency landing.
The inspector Tony Townsend from Port Stephens LAC said that pilots had noticed smoke emanating from the instrument panel inside the cockpit and touched down on the runway of Newcastle around 3.14 p.m.
Air force services had also attended the scene of the incident.
Virgin Australia had confirmed all passengers were evacuated off the plane safely.
