Today Virgin Trains transported a family of three female wrestlers on-board The Cumbrian Spirit (Pendolino 390010) train from the Lake District to Euston to bring Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling to the streets of London.
Sisters, Tracy (25), Connie (20) and Rosie Hodgson (9), whose father, Trevor, is a former two-times world champion, ‘broke-out’ wrestling moves at various landmarks across the Capital to raise awareness that the first ever women’s world championship for Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling will be held in Cumbria next month.
Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling is a key part of the traditional sporting fixtures that take place throughout the Lake District each summer. Women have only been allowed to compete in Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, for the past 10 years.
Connie, a sports coaching student, said: “We all love wrestling. We used to go with dad to the wrestling academy in Kendal. It’s a quick and nimble sport and was something different to talk about at school.”
Jak Hirst, Chairman of Ambleside Sports, said: “We are very proud to be hosting the first world championship. We have staged women’s events over the last few years but we are thrilled to have the world championship here on our 130th anniversary.”
John Hodgson, World Heritage Coordinator for the Lake District National Park, said: “Traditional sports, such as Cumbrian Wrestling, are a key feature of the World Heritage bid, as a rich cultural landscape. Good luck to the women wrestlers taking the sport to London.”
Michelle Ragozzino, Virgin Trains Station Manager at Oxenholme, said: “We’re keen to showcase everything Cumbria has to offer and that it is very much open for business this summer, following the devastating floods earlier in the year. We’re proud to play our part in highlighting that the first ever women’s world championship in Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling will be taking place in Ambleside. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the world to Oxenholme and hope they have chance to explore this beautiful region.”
Ambleside Traditional Lakeland Sports, which will feature the women’s championship Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, will be held at Rydal Park on Thursday 28 July.
