Virgin Trains east coast today opened the first customer lounge at Grantham station. Unveiled by Managing Director, David Horne, and one of the stations’ longest-serving commuters, Brigadier Charles Smith GM, the lounge will provide customers with a place to relax in the station.
The lounge, located conveniently on platform 1, allows customers to recharge themselves and their devices before they hop on board one of the 32 trains a day to London and the North. The lounge is part of Virgin Trains’ £140M investment in the franchise, which has meant a recent boost to weekday services in Grantham, as well as Wi-Fi which will be introduced at the station in the coming months. Tickets come in as little as £12 one way for the 1h09 journey to the capital.
Brigadier Charles Smith GM, 88, has been travelling through Grantham Station weekly for the past 26 years. The decorated Brigadier annually buys Christmas gifts for Virgin Trains staff and has donated paintings of steam locomotives to Virgin Trains lounges at London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley.
David Horne, Managing Director of Virgin Trains on the east coast said: “We’re passionate about giving our customers the best possible experience and that starts long before they board our trains. We know that being able to relax ahead of a journey or prepare for that key business meeting is one of the things that our customers really value. Many of our customers like Brigadier Charles Smith have been using trains on this route for decades. We hope that our continued investment in station facilities and on-board our trains will keep loyal customers coming back, and encourage more people to travel with us.”
Grantham resident, Brigadier Charles Smith GM, said: “It is both a pleasure and a privilege for me to be asked to formally open this customer lounge. I have travelled from this station continuously for the past 26 years, forming an affectionate attachment for the place and the truly excellent staff. It now gives me enormous pleasure to declare this very fine lounge open and to wish great comfort to all those who make use of it in the future.”
In addition to the investment in Grantham station, Virgin Trains recently announced the end of its £50M fleet refurbishment which saw a significant boost to customer satisfaction scores in the annual NRPS results. There was a 10% rise in scores for the upkeep and repair of trains and an 8% increase in the comfort of train seats.
